STATUS

The inequalities in oral health reflect our deepest social and economic divides. The perfect “Hollywood” smile is a status symbol. The wealthy pay thousands and thousands of dollars for elective procedures to obtain it, meanwhile one out of three low income americans avoid smiling because of their teeth and the stigma surrounding poor oral health. I created 3d teeth out of resin and photographed them, designing a high-end luxury catalogue with lavish descriptions and pricing, creating a look of elegance and exclusivity to foster a desirability and superficially elevate their status.

In addition, I created a “lookbook” of dental offices around Los Angeles that are much less desirable to show the other side of the class divide. The book is single color risograph printed on newsprint. To highlight the contrast, I placed the pages from the catalogue inside of the publication.
