YATRA TYPE SPECIMEN

Yatra One font is designed by Catherine Leigh Schmitt and was inspired by the hand-painted signage of the Mumbai local railway. The specimen is double-sided, functioning as both a poster and an 8 panel book.

To express the narrative and my feelings about the typeface, I used an article that discusses the history of colonialism via British rule in India and the role railways played in that history, acknowledging how typography was often used as a tool of colonialism in India. The design and content of the specimen shows off the unique physical characteristics of Yatra while also telling it’s history.
